MATERIAL

LDPE (PIC 4) - Low Density Polyethylene

LDPE (PIC 4) - Low Density Polyethylene

Plastic Identification Code 4

A soft, flexible plastic commonly used in items like plastic bags, cling wrap, bread bags, squeeze bottles, and some food packaging.

Disposal Options

  • Coloured Soft Plastic - General waste Bin
  • Clear Soft Plastic (Clean & Dry) - Launceston Recycling Centre

Why
LDPE is not suitable for most kerbside recycling bins because it can get tangled in sorting machinery. Only clear soft plastics can be recycled at the Launceston Recycling Centre, if it is clean and dry. Contaminated and coloured plastics cannot be processed and must go to landfill.

Did You Know
The plastic identification code (numbers 1–7 inside the recycling triangle) used in Australia shows the type of plastic resin an item is made from, not whether it can be recycled in your kerbside bin.
